Mortgage rates cut by Woolwich

Date August 6, 2008

Over recent weeks the swap rate, which is indicative of mortgage interest rates, has fallen after peaking recently, and industry officials urged lenders to pass on the saving to consumers through a reduction in interest rates.

Whilst mortgage interest rates are still high for some consumers, a number of lenders have lade reductions to the rates on some of their mortgage products, and the Woolwich is one of the lenders that has recently cut mortgage interest rates.

Officials from Woolwich said that the lender had cut its interest rates in line with a slight ease in borrowing on the wholesale money markets. The interest rates on its popular three year fixed rate mortgage fell from 6.49% to 6.29%, and the interest rate on its five year fixed rate mortgage fell from 6.39% to 6.29%. For the ten year fixed rate mortgage the interest rate drop was greater, with rates falling from 6.29% to 5.97%.

An official from the Woolwich, which is part of the Barclay’s Group, stated: "We have seen an improvement in the swap rates recently and we have taken the opportunity to reduce our longer-term fixed rates where we see customers can get the best value at the moment."

During the first three months of this year Woolwich mortgage loans accounted for around 28% of all mortgage lending in the UK, which was a dramatic rise from the 9% seen a year earlier.

A number of other lenders have reduced their mortgage interest rates now in line with the fall in swap rates, and this has brought the average interest rate on a two year fixed rate mortgage down to 6.96% from the decade high rate of 7.08%.

The 15 day losing streak was caused due to the political as well as economic uncertainity that the country is now in the midst of. Hopefully the powers that be in Pakistan will soon realize that instead of sponsoring terorist groups indulging in terrorism activities in India, if they worked towards developing the economy the country will follow India and China in being one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
